Itsukushima Shrine dates back to the era of Emperor Suiko (593). However, its current beautiful appearance was due to major renovations by Taira no Kiyomori. So why did Kiyomori maintain this shrine? Itsukushima is commonly referred to as ``Aki's Miyajima'' and is counted as one of Japan's three most scenic views. It is famous for its worship from the Heike clan, and Taira no Kiyomori built the large-scale shrine building that stands on the sea today. The shrine building is currently the main hall.
